Import Templates

Hello
I exported my templates from a test site via the export tool and got an xml file but I’m not sure how to import that file into my main site.
Which import tool should I use? Where should the file go?
many thanks

Hi Neil,

Thanks for getting in touch! Re. exporting, looks like you have that covered. Importing is a similar process to where you click on Import via that same Tools menu. From there, click on ‘WordPress’ in that list and it will automatically ask you to download the needed importer to handle importing an XML file. From there, just follow the step to upload your XML file and you should be good to go! Let me know how it goes!

Best,
Billy

Thanks very much Billy. I wasn’t sure which to pick from the assortment of import options. That clears it up nicely.

By the way, when I found myself saving a new version of one of my templates, I thought it would be great to have the ability to overwrite a template or easily delete the previous version. If you are taking feature requests, that would be one of mine!

Many thanks
Neil

Ah, I should have tested the importer before I wrote that last update.
It said it worked ok and everything imported, but now when I choose the template in the new page, it gives me little more than space for a new module.

And there was certainly a lot more in the xml file than that.

Also, my apologies, I’ve found out how to delete templates in the template chooser. My mistake, I thought it would be in the admin area. Sorry.

Hey Neil,

Sorry to hear if there are issues. Are you ensuring that when you export, you are only toggling the ‘Layout Templates’ option at the bottom of the list?

Best,
Billy

Thanks Billy. Yes definitely.
I recorded the process quickly in case it’s helpful:

Hey Neil,

Thanks for screencast. So, none of the content from your exported template is taking when importing, correct? Are you noticing any errors by chance?

Best,
Billy

Thanks Billy. No. I just checked again and I can’t see any errors.

To explain what I am doing. My site is hosted on WPEngine which provides a useful staging environment.
I built a page with Beaver Builder on the staging site and having got it the way I wanted, tried to import the layout to the live site. I am not sure if I expected all the content to be transferred but it would certainly save a lot of grief if the template copied over.

Yea, that is weird and not intended. I wonder if you could share credentials for both sites so we can take a look? Feel free to mark as a private reply.

Best,
Billy

Thanks Neil, we’re on the case!

Hi Neil,

I did some testing and found that there appears to be a bug in the WordPress importer. If you’re interested in the details, you can read up on that here…

https://plugins.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/2317

Below is a link to a patched version of the importer that you can download and install to use for the time being. Let me know how that goes for you.

Hi Justin
Thanks very much for that. It seems to have worked well.
I haven’t found any problems so far.
It certainly saves a lot of time transferring template from test site to live.
Many thanks
Neil

You’re welcome, Neil! I’m glad that worked. Hopefully we get a response from the plugin developer so the issue can be addressed in an update on their end.

Justin
