Both dev and live websites have lost BB content

This is the first time I’m trying to migrate a BB site from a dev location to its destination, on the same server. I’m using Backup Buddy to migrate, which I’ve used many times in the past successfully. Backup Buddy says the migration is successful, and the target site shows the header, footer, and menu, but no Page Builder content. I have to restore my live site to the old content, so you can’t see it there, but I did take a screenshot. I tried clearing the BB cache and when that didn’t work I tried using the DB search-replace utility that you recommended to replace DB links in the DB for the target site. No help.

But even worse, now that I’ve gone back to my dev site, I have exactly the same problem! The Page Builder content is missing from every page:
http://acmeguano.com/ssbb/
If I look at any page in Page Builder, I can see the content, but if I click any option in the Done menu, including Discard Changes, the content is gone from Page Builder at that point. So my Contact page content is now wiped out both in the HTML view and the Page Builder view. I cleared the BB cache on my Dev site, didn’t help. I also verified in wp-config.php that my dv DB still had the correct name and hadn’t somehow been migrated to the one I was trying to migrate to.

I have a full backup of my dev site that I made with BackupBuddy, but at this point I’m afraid to restore it, and at this point I’m not even sure I’ll be able to restore my content. I’m dying over here. Hoping you’ve seen this problem before and have an easy fix.
I’ll be happy to give my admin pw for my dev site once I know this is privately posted.

Hi Nancy,

Can you provide a temp admin access to your site, please and if possible the dev one too?

Thanks,
Danyn

Hi Nancy,

Is it possible to do the migration again, please? As we really need to see the error, so we can determine what the cause is.

Thanks,
Danny

Thanks Nancy.

Also, when you do the migration can you make sure WP_DEBUG is set to true in your wp-config.php file and provide a link to the page that has no content.

Thanks,
Danny

Hi Nancy,

If you’re receiving a Server Error 500, you really need to contact your web host provider, as that is likely the cause of the issue and out of our hands unfortunately.

If you can perform a migration without any server error being present before or after, then we can take a closer look. However, if you’re getting that, then you really need to speak to your host first and get them to investigate further.

Thanks,
Danny

Hi Nancy,

Is this happening on a particular page or all of them? As I have just created a new page saved as draft and I added a Text module without any issue.

I added some text and clicked Done > Save Draft. The module is still active.

Hi Nancy,

So I have now seen the issue you’re referring to. The Nancy content was there, I loaded up the builder, made no changes, but when I clicked Done > Publish. The content then disappeared.

The only thing I can think of, especially how it never happened on the page I created is that.

  1. You have a plugin that was loaded on your page, causing the issue. So can you try disabling all active plugins except for BB and see if you can recreate the issue again.

  2. You added custom code to some of the modules, that was either causing a conflict i.e. JavaScript or invalid HTML. Is any of this possible?

Thanks,
Danny

Hey Nancy,

Sorry, a bit late to the party here. Let me just see if I got this right. So you have a dev site under http://acmeguano.com/ssbb/ that you’re trying to migrate to http://acmeguano.com/ using BackupBuddy. When you did, the migration failed so no content showed up on http://acmeguano.com/ so you reverted it back to the old content. But for some reason, your dev site under /ssbb is also experiencing the same thing? How did you revert the old content back? Did you restore from a backup? Are you using the same database for both? Can you share more info re database details?

Hey Nancy,

The migration process shouldn’t break the dev site. I believe it simply copies the files/DB to the new site, then it does a serialized search and replace on the new site, I think that’s how BackupBuddy does it. My guess is that the dev site wasn’t in working condition when you did the migration. This would explain why the production site is having the same problem as well.

What’s the status of the dev site now? Is everything working fine? If it is, can you do the migration again to the production site? We do have a lot of users here using BackupBuddy for migration from local/staging to live.

Also, I don’t think the site being in the root directory or subdirectory has any bearing to the issue at all so long as all instances of the old URL/directory are replaced with the new one. And BackupBuddy does a great job at doing that.
